微明

原文
將欲歙之、必固張之。將欲弱之、必固強之。將欲廢之、必固興之。將欲奪之、必固與之。是謂微明。柔弱勝剛強。魚不可脫於淵、國之利器不可以示人。

將に之を歙めんと欲すれば、必ず固く之を張る。將に之を弱めんと欲すれば、必ず固く之を強くす。將に之を廢せんと欲すれば、必ず固く之を興す。將に之を奪はんと欲すれば、必ず固く之を與ふ。是を微明と謂ふ。柔弱は剛強に勝つ。魚は淵より脫すべからず、國の利器は以て人に示すべからず。
現代語訳
何かを縮めようとするなら、まずしっかりと張らせておく。何かを弱めようとするなら、まずしっかりと強くさせておく。何かを廃そうとするなら、まずしっかりと興させておく。何かを奪おうとするなら、まずしっかりと与えておく。これを微かなる明知という。柔らかく弱いものが、硬く強いものに勝つのである。魚が深い淵から出てはならないように、国家にとっての強力な武器や仕組みもまた、みだりに人に見せてはならないのである。
中文釋義
想要收敛什么,必先使它张扬;想要削弱什么,必先使它强盛;想要废弃什么,必先使它兴旺;想要夺取什么,必先施予于它。这就叫做微妙难察的明智。柔弱之所以能够胜过刚强,正如鱼儿不可须臾离开深渊,一国真正倚仗的利器与谋略,也绝不可轻易展示于人前。
English
What is to be contracted must first be stretched wide; what is to be weakened must first be made strong; what is to be abolished must first be raised up; what is to be taken must first be given. This is called subtle insight — the soft and yielding overcomes the hard and strong. Just as a fish must never leave the depths, a state's most effective instruments should never be flaunted before others; true strength stays hidden until it matters.

Sometimes the way to gain something is not to reach for it directly. Giving a little first, stepping back before pressing forward, tends to yield sturdier results than grabbing outright. Whatever leverage or advantage genuinely matters rarely needs announcing — it holds its value precisely by staying unspoken until the moment calls for it. A soft approach looks like it concedes ground, yet it often outlasts open confrontation, much as a fish depends on staying in deep water.
