反者道之動、弱者道之用。天下萬物生於有、有生於無。

反るは道の動、弱きは道の用。天下萬物は有より生じ、有は無より生ず。
現代語訳
道の動きは、進むことではなくもとへ帰ることにある。道のはたらきは、剛強によってではなく柔弱によって現れる。天下にある万物はすべて「有」から生まれ、その「有」もまたさらに根源の「無」から生まれ出るのである。ここに示されているのは、循環し戻っていく動きこそが道の本質であり、しなやかで弱いものこそが道のはたらき方であるという道理である。強く前へ進むことばかりを追い求めず、めぐり戻る流れと、柔らかく身を処すあり方に目を向けたい。

"反"是道运行的规律——万物发展到极致，总会向对立面回归；"弱"是道发挥作用的方式——柔弱胜过刚强，才是道真正起作用的样子。天下万物都从"有"这个层面产生，而"有"本身又是从更根本的"无"中生出来的。这一章短短数句，道出了老子哲学最核心的两个特点：循环往复与以柔克刚，以及有与无相生的宇宙生成次第。

Reversal is how the Way moves; softness is how the Way functions. All things under heaven arise from being, and being itself arises from non-being. In a few spare lines, this chapter distills two central threads of Laozi's thought: that things, carried to their extreme, turn back toward their opposite, and that what yields and bends outlasts what is hard and forceful — while existence itself is grounded in something prior, unnamed, and empty.

When something stalls and neither pushing forward nor holding still seems to work, forcing it rarely opens a way through. Movement in the natural order tends to circle back rather than run straight, and what actually gets things moving again is usually softness rather than force. A standstill is not necessarily bad news — it can be the early sign of a turn. Stepping back half a pace, before pressing harder, often reveals where things start moving again.
