English
"Before joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure arise, this state is called equilibrium; when they arise but all attain due measure, this is called harmony. Equilibrium is the great root of all under heaven; harmony is the path traveled by all under heaven." The line does not ask us to suppress feeling but to let it surface in right proportion — stillness as foundation, fittingness as its living expression.
A Word for Today
The quiet before a feeling arises, and whether that feeling lands in due proportion once it does, are two equally important matters. There is no need to aim for an absence of joy or anger; what matters is noticing whether its expression runs too far or falls short. A person who can hold that proportion in daily dealings rarely needs to say much, the people around them simply feel steadier for it.
