跬歩を積まざれば、以て千里に至る無し

故不積跬步，無以至千里；不積小流，無以成江海。
訓読
故に跬歩を積まざれば、以て千里に至る無く、小流を積まざれば、以て江海を成す無し。
現代語訳
半歩ずつの歩みを積み重ねなければ、千里の彼方に至ることはできない。小さな流れが集まらなければ、大河や海にはならない。「勧学篇」でこの句は、学問における継続の力を説く核心の一つであり、才能の有無よりも、日々の小さな積み重ねを止めないことこそが遠くへ至る唯一の道であると荀子は述べている。
中文釋義
千里之遥,非一步可至,须半步半步累积而成;江海之阔,非一源可成,须细流细流汇聚而就。荀子于《勧学篇》以此喻立论:学问之道无捷径,惟恃日拱一卒的积累。才性有别,而积累无欺——肯下笨功夫、不问断者,终能抵达才气纵横者未必能至之处。

"Without accumulating half-steps, one cannot reach a thousand miles; without accumulating small streams, one cannot form a great river or sea." Xunzi insists that mastery is built not from talent alone but from uninterrupted accumulation — modest, steady progress compounds into distances that no single leap could cover.

Distance discourages before anyone takes a single step, especially when the destination sits a thousand miles off. Xunzi turns attention back to something smaller: no half-step accumulated, no thousand miles ever covered. Rivers and seas are not carved by one sudden flood but gathered, drop by drop, from countless narrow streams. The useful question is rarely how far the goal sits, but whether today's modest stretch of ground gets covered before the day quietly ends.
