遠水は、近火を救わざるなり

失火而取水於海、海水雖多、火必不滅矣。遠水不救近火也。
訓読
火を失いて水を海に取らば、海水多しと雖も、火必ず滅えざらん。遠水は近火を救わざるなり。
現代語訳
火事が起きたときに海から水を汲もうとしても、海の水がどれほど多くとも、その火は消せない。遠くの水は近くの火事の役には立たないのである。魯の国が斉に攻められた際、遠方の晋・楚に助けを求めようとした策を戒めて語られた喩えで、事の緩急に応じた現実的な手段を選ぶべきだという教えである。
中文釋義
失火时若指望从大海取水灭火,海水再多,那火也一定救不了——远处的水,救不了眼前的火。这是韩非子劝谏鲁国不要寄望于远方晋、楚来救援眼前齐国之患时所用的比喻:再宏大的资源,若不能及时到位,也解决不了眼前的急难。
English
If your house is on fire and you try to fetch water from the sea, no matter how vast that sea is, the fire will not be put out in time—distant water cannot save a nearby fire. Han Feizi used this to warn against the state of Lu pinning its hopes on faraway allies to rescue it from an immediate threat: however great a resource, it is useless if it cannot arrive when actually needed.

A Word for Today
When Lu faced an immediate threat, an adviser proposed appealing to distant allies for rescue — Han Feizi's response was blunt: distant water does not save a nearby fire. The same trap catches anyone facing an urgent problem while pinning hope on help that has not yet arrived — a budget not yet approved, an introduction not yet made, a favor not yet returned, while the fire is already at hand. However great a resource, if it cannot arrive in time, it is worth exactly as much as no resource at all.
