English

A merchant from Chu came to sell pearls in the state of Zheng. He crafted an exquisite box of magnolia wood, perfumed with cinnamon and pepper, studded with jade, adorned with rose-like ornament, trimmed with kingfisher feathers. The buyer purchased the box—and returned the pearl inside it. He was skilled at selling boxes, Han Feizi notes dryly, but not at selling pearls: a jab at rhetoric so ornate it buries the substance it was meant to convey.

A Word for Today

The merchant crafted a box so lavish that the buyer took the box and returned the pearl inside it. Han Feizi's target is not the buyer's poor judgment but the seller's misplaced effort — polish a presentation enough, and even its maker can lose track of whether the pearl or the box was ever the point. The same drift shows up in reports and proposals: the wording refined, the structure elegant, while the actual judgment at the center gets a passing mention. What a thing is called should match what it does — ornament, however fine, is never the substance.
