君子は坦として蕩蕩たり

君子坦蕩蕩，小人長戚戚。
訓読
君子は坦として蕩蕩たり、小人は長として戚戚たり。
現代語訳
君子の心はいつも広々として、ゆったりと落ち着いている。それに対して小人は、いつもくよくよと思い悩み、心が休まることがない、と孔子は言う。地位や境遇の違いではなく、日頃の心の持ちようそのものが、君子と小人とを分ける決定的な違いであることを、簡潔な対句で言い表した一節である。
中文釋義
坦荡荡者,心地光明、宽广舒展,无所愧怍,故能安然自在;长戚戚者,心怀私虑、患得患失,故常忧惧不安。孔子以此二语对举,揭示君子小人之别,不在贫富贵贱之外表,而在方寸之间是否坦然无私。君子行事但求心安理得,故虽处逆境亦能舒泰;小人心系一己得失,故虽处顺境亦难释怀。
English
"The noble person is calm and open; the petty person is forever anxious and troubled." What separates the two, Confucius suggests, is not status or fortune but the habitual state of the heart — one at ease because it holds nothing to hide, the other perpetually knotted by private worry over gain and loss.

心里不安的时候,多半是被什么得失或面子缠住了。孔子说君子心地坦荡,倒不是天生豁达,而是行事但求无愧于心,故而少有牵挂；小人反复计较,纵然身处顺境,也难得安宁。今日若觉心绪不宁,不妨先问一句:此刻烦忧的,究竟是道理上说不过去,还是不过是一时的得失罢了。
A Word for Today
Unease usually traces back to some tangle of gain, loss, or standing. A calm heart, as Confucius describes it, is not a natural gift so much as the result of acting in ways one need not hide, there is simply less to carry. Constant grievance persists even in good times, because it answers to gain and loss rather than to what is actually right. When restless today, it helps to ask which one is really at work.
