English
Our lives are finite, but what there is to know is not — and chasing the boundless with something bounded only wears a person down. Opening the chapter on nourishing life, the line is not an argument against learning, but a caution against forgetting the limits of one's own body and years while pursuing knowledge without end.
A Word for Today
The list of things worth learning never runs out, and the more one adds to it, the more inadequate one feels. Zhuangzi notes that life is bounded while knowledge is not, and chasing the boundless with something bounded wears a person down. The list can grow forever, but a day's energy cannot — knowing where to set the book down and draw a line for today is what allows the pursuit to continue at all.
