毎況愈下、その本来の意味は「毎下愈況」

夫子之問也，固不及質。正獲之問於監市履狶也，每下愈況。
訓読
夫子の問いや、固より質に及ばず。正獲の監市に履狶を問うや、下れば愈々況かなり。
現代語訳
あなたの問いは、そもそも道の本質にまでは届いていない。市場の検査役が豚の肥り具合を確かめるとき、脚の下の方まで踏んで調べるほど、その様子はいっそう明らかになる——道はどこにあるかと問う東郭子に対し、荘子はこの譬えで答えた。「卑しく低い場所ほど、かえって道の実相がよく検証できる」という意味であり、この「每下愈況」がのちに転じて「状況が悪化する」を指す「每況愈下」という言葉になったのだが、原義はむしろ逆で、低いところをたどるほど真実がより明らかになる、という肯定的な検証の論理であった。
中文釋義
"夫子之问,本就未及道之实质。正如市场检验官为猪估重,越往猪腿下端踩踏,肥瘦越是显明"——庄子借这一比喻,回应东郭子"道在何处"之问,说明越是卑微低下之处,越能验证大道无所不在的真相。后世"每下愈况"渐渐讹传为"每况愈下",专指情况一再恶化,词义已与原意大相径庭,原文本意其实是越往下考察、越能得到印证。

Your question, Zhuangzi tells Dongguo Zi, has not yet reached the substance of the matter — much as a market inspector judges a pig's fatness more clearly the lower down its legs he presses. The point is that the Way reveals itself most plainly in the lowest, humblest places. Centuries later this phrase drifted into the common idiom for things "going from bad to worse," even though the original sense was almost the opposite — the further down you look, the more clearly the truth is confirmed.

A market inspector judges a pig's fatness most clearly by pressing along the lower part of its legs — Zhuangzi's point being that the humblest, least noticed places are often where the truth of a matter is most plainly confirmed. It is easy to attend only to what looks impressive and skip past the plain, low-lying details. Checking the ordinary, overlooked parts of a situation usually says more than any grand account of it.
