English

The Way that can be spoken is not the constant Way; the name that can be named is not the constant name. The nameless is the origin of heaven and earth; the named is the mother of the ten thousand things. Free of desire, one perceives the subtle wonder; caught in desire, one perceives only its outward bounds. These two arise together and differ only in name — both may be called the mystery. Mystery upon mystery: the gateway to all wonders. Language names the surface; the Way itself remains prior to naming.

A Word for Today

Naming something settles it too quickly. Faced with a person or a situation, the habit is to judge first and label after, as if the label were the whole of understanding. What matters most usually lives in the quiet interval before the name is given. On first meeting someone, or first facing a new matter, it helps to withhold the verdict a little longer and let the thing show itself fully. The judgment can wait; it loses nothing by waiting.
