むげん
原文
道沖、而用之或不盈。淵兮、似萬物之宗。挫其銳、解其紛、和其光、同其塵。湛兮、似或存。吾不知誰之子、象帝之先。
書き下し文
道は沖なるも、之を用ひて或いは盈たず。淵として、萬物の宗に似たり。其の銳を挫き、其の紛を解き、其の光を和らげ、其の塵に同ず。湛として、或いは存するに似たり。吾れ誰の子なるかを知らず、帝の先に象たり。
現代語訳
道は虚しく空っぽのようでありながら、いくら用いても尽きることがない。深く淵のようであり、あたかも万物の大本であるかのようだ。その鋭さを挫き、そのもつれを解きほぐし、その眩しい輝きを和らげ、俗世の塵と同じ次元に身を置く。澄み渡って深く、確かにそこに在るかのようだ。私はそれが誰の子であるかを知らないが、それは天の主宰者よりも先に存在していたかのように思われる。
中文釋義
道体虚空无形,似乎空空如也,可是它的作用却用之不尽。它深邃幽远,仿佛是万物的本源和宗主。它磨去自己的锋芒锐气,解开纷扰缠结,收敛耀眼的光芒,混同于尘世之中,不显山露水。它深沉澄澈,似有若无,却又确实存在。我不知道它是从何而生、由谁产生的,只觉得它似乎比传统信仰中至高无上的天帝还要更早存在。
English
The Way is like an empty vessel, yet its use is never exhausted. Deep and still, it seems the ancestor of all things. It blunts sharp edges, unties tangles, softens glare, and joins with the dust of the world. Clear and deep, it seems to be there, though unseen. I do not know whose child it is — it seems to have existed even before the Lord of Heaven. The image is of a source so fundamental that it precedes even the highest personified authority known to ancient belief.

自分の鋭さや正しさを誇示せず、あえて周りの人や物事に溶け込んでみる。それは自分を消し埋没させることではなく、余分な角が取れて、かえって長く働き続けるための静かな知恵である。目立たなくても、周囲に馴染みながら役に立ち続けるものほど、実はいちばん底が深く、頼りになる。

锋芒外露,人前显得聪明,换来的常常是处处被人提防。真正耐用的做法,是把自己的棱角磨去一些,和光同尘,不特意分出高低远近。深藏不露不是委屈自己,只是省下了那些用来防人、也用来被人防的心力,留给真正要紧的事去用。不显山露水的人,往往走得比谁都远。
A Word for Today
Showing off sharpness or cleverness in front of others tends to invite wariness rather than trust. What actually lasts is filing down one's own edges, blending in rather than standing apart or ranking above. Staying unremarkable is not self-denial — it simply frees the energy that would otherwise go into guarding oneself and being guarded against, leaving it for what actually matters. The one who stays out of the spotlight often goes the farthest.
