虛用

原文
天地不仁、以萬物爲芻狗。聖人不仁、以百姓爲芻狗。天地之間、其猶橐籥乎。虛而不屈、動而愈出。多言數窮、不如守中。
書き下し文
天地は仁ならず、萬物を以て芻狗と爲す。聖人は仁ならず、百姓を以て芻狗と爲す。天地の間は、其れ猶ほ橐籥のごときか。虛にして屈きず、動きて愈々出づ。多言は數々窮す、中を守るに如かず。
現代語訳
天地は人間のような情け深さを持たず、万物を祭りの藁人形のようにあるがままに扱い、特別扱いしない。聖人も同様に、情けにとらわれず、人々をあるがままに扱う。天地の間は、ちょうど鞴のようなものではないか。中は空っぽでありながら尽きることがなく、動かせば動かすほど風が出てくる。言葉数が多いとかえって行き詰まりやすい、それよりも内なる静けさを守るほうがよい。
中文釋義
天地对待万物,没有人为的偏爱怜悯,就像对待祭祀用完就丢弃的草扎狗一样,任其自生自灭,不刻意施恩。圣人治理百姓,也是同样的道理,不用小恩小惠去笼络人心。天地之间,岂不像一个风箱吗?中间虚空,却鼓动不尽,越是运动,风力越是源源不断。政令烦琐、话说得越多,越容易行不通、陷入困境,不如持守内心的虚静,少说多做。
English
Heaven and earth are not sentimental; they treat the ten thousand things as straw dogs, offerings used in ritual and then discarded without regret. The sage treats people the same way, without doting favoritism. Is the space between heaven and earth not like a bellows? Empty, yet never exhausted; the more it moves, the more it yields. Too many words lead quickly to exhaustion — better to hold to the quiet center within. The chapter argues against sentimental intervention and excessive talk in governance.

Mixing too much personal favor into how one treats people or handles affairs tends to blur judgment rather than sharpen it. Heaven and earth nurture all things without playing favorites, and the same discipline serves daily work — the more sentiment creeps in, the shakier the decisions become. Too many rules, too much explaining, tend to break down faster. Holding a quiet, steady center, and saying less, usually gets more done.
