老子道徳経 第6章
成象
せいしょう
原文
谷神不死、是謂玄牝。玄牝之門、是謂天地根。綿綿若存、用之不勤。
書き下し文
谷神は死せず、是を玄牝と謂ふ。玄牝の門、是を天地の根と謂ふ。綿綿として存するが若く、之を用ひて勤きず。
現代語訳
谷間のように虚しく窪んだ場所に宿る霊妙な働きは、決して死に絶えることがない。これを玄牝、すなわち万物を生み出す奥深い母なるものと呼ぶ。その玄牝が万物を生み出す門こそが、天地が生まれ出てくる根源であると言われる。それは目に見えるはっきりした姿を持たず、あるかないか分からぬほど細く長く、絶えることなく続いていくように存在し続け、しかもいくら汲み出し用いても、決して疲れ果てて尽きてしまうことがない。
中文釋義
山谷般虚空低洼之处所蕴含的灵妙生机,永远不会消亡断绝,这就叫做玄牝——一种深奥幽微、具有孕育化生万物能力的母性力量。玄牝生育万物所经由的门户,正是天地万物生生不息、绵延不绝的根本源头所在。它若隐若现、绵绵不绝地持续存在着,不显山露水,却又确实发挥作用;无论怎样汲取运用它,都不会因此而枯竭穷尽、耗损殆尽。
English
The spirit of the valley never dies; it is called the mysterious female. The gate of the mysterious female is called the root of heaven and earth. It continues on, delicate and unbroken, as though barely there — yet however much it is drawn upon, it is never used up. The image praises the low, receptive, valley-like emptiness as the inexhaustible source from which all things continually arise.

谷のように低く、へこんで目立たない場所にこそ、決して尽きない力が静かに宿っていることがある。前に出て張り合い、我先にと主張するよりも、じっと受け止め続ける在り方を選んでみる。細く長く、途切れることなく続いていくものは、勢いよく燃え上がるものよりも、案外いちばん強くしなやかな力を持っている。

山谷低洼,看着毫不起眼,泉水却源源不断从那里涌出,从不见枯竭。人也一样,肯把自己放低、肯接住别人不愿接的差事,反而攒下别人攒不住的东西。争先抢功的势头来得快、去得也快;倒是那些甘居下位、绵绵不绝做着分内事的人,走到最后往往还站在原地。不必急着让人看见,先把根扎稳,水自然会往这里流。
A Word for Today
A valley sits low and draws little attention, yet the spring never stops flowing from it, never runs dry. People work the same way — those willing to stay low, to take on the tasks others avoid, end up holding something others never manage to keep. The push to get ahead and claim credit burns bright and fades fast. It is usually the ones content to stay low, doing their quiet work without interruption, who are still standing at the end.
