易性

原文
上善若水。水善利萬物而不爭、處衆人之所惡、故幾於道。居善地、心善淵、與善仁、言善信、政善治、事善能、動善時。夫唯不爭、故無尤。

上善は水の若し。水は善く萬物を利して爭はず、衆人の惡む所に處る、故に道に幾し。居は地を善しとし、心は淵きを善しとし、與は仁を善しとし、言は信を善しとし、政は治を善しとし、事は能を善しとし、動は時を善しとす。夫れ唯だ爭はず、故に尤無し。
現代語訳
最高の善は水のようなものである。水は万物をよく潤し利するが、他と争おうとせず、誰もが嫌う低い場所に身を置く。だからこそ道に近いと言える。住まいは低地を善しとし、心は深く静かなることを善しとし、人との関わりは誠実さを善しとし、言葉は信を守ることを善しとし、政治は秩序をよく保つことを善しとし、仕事はよく能力を発揮することを善しとし、行動は時機をよく見極めることを善しとする。そもそも争わないからこそ、咎められることがないのである。
中文釋義
最高的善就像水一样。水滋润万物、有利于万物,却不与万物争高下,反而甘愿停留在众人都厌恶的卑下之地,所以水的德性最接近于道。居处善于选择低洼安稳之地,存心善于保持深沉宁静,待人善于真诚仁厚,言语善于恪守信用,为政善于治理有序,做事善于发挥所长,行动善于把握时机。正因为水从不与万物相争,所以才不会招来过失和怨咎。
English
The highest good is like water. Water benefits the ten thousand things well, yet does not contend; it dwells in the low places that people disdain, and so it is close to the Way. In dwelling, it favors low ground; in mind, quiet depth; in giving, genuine kindness; in speech, trustworthiness; in governing, good order; in work, real competence; in action, right timing. Because it does not contend, it incurs no blame. Water becomes the model for a strength that never needs to fight for position.

水のように、あえて低い場所や、誰もやりたがらない地味な役割を引き受けてみる。人と争わずにいれば、恨みも咎めも自然と寄ってこなくなる。柔らかく、低く在り続けることは、決して弱さではなく、時をかけていちばん長持ちする、静かな強さの形なのである。

水从不与谁争高下,总往低处流,滋润万物却不声张,所以最接近于道。做事若能学水一分,把姿态放低,不与人争一时长短,反而少招是非。职场里最难得的,往往不是锋芒毕露的能人,而是这种做完事就退到一旁、从不计较名分的人。低,从来不等于弱;不争,也从来不是没有立场。
A Word for Today
Water never competes for the high ground; it flows low, nourishing everything without announcing itself, which is why it comes closest to the Way. Working the way water moves — keeping a low posture, not contesting for immediate advantage — tends to draw less trouble than pushing hard for recognition. What is often rarest at work is not the person with obvious talent, but the one who finishes the job and steps quietly aside, unconcerned with credit. Staying low has never meant being weak, and not contending has never meant having no position at all.
