淳風

原文
太上、下知有之。其次、親而譽之。其次、畏之。其次、侮之。信不足焉、有不信焉。悠兮其貴言。功成事遂、百姓皆謂我自然。

太上は、下之有るを知る。其の次は、親しみて之を譽む。其の次は、之を畏る。其の次は、之を侮る。信足らざれば、信ぜられざること有り。悠として其れ言を貴ぶ。功成り事遂げて、百姓皆な我れ自ら然りと謂ふ。
現代語訳
最も優れた統治者については、人民はただその存在を知っているだけである。その次の統治者は、人民から親しまれ、称えられる。その次の統治者は、人民から恐れられる。その次の統治者は、人民から侮られる。統治者の信が足りなければ、人民から信じてもらえないことになる。優れた統治者は悠然としてみだりに言葉を発することを重んじない。功績が成り事業が成し遂げられても、人民は皆「自分たちが自然にそうなったのだ」と言う。
中文釋義
最好的统治者,百姓只知道他的存在,并不特别感受到他的作为;次一等的统治者,百姓亲近他、赞美他;再次一等的,百姓畏惧他;最差的,百姓轻蔑他。统治者自身诚信不足,百姓自然就不会信任他。最好的统治者从容淡定,不轻易发号施令、夸夸其谈。等到功业成就、事情办成之后,百姓都会说:"我们本来就是这样自然而然做成的。"这说明最高明的治理,是让人感觉不到治理的痕迹,一切如同自发而成。
English
Of the highest rulers, people merely know they exist. The next best are loved and praised by the people. The next are feared. The worst are despised. When a ruler's own trustworthiness is lacking, the people will not trust him. The best rulers are unhurried and sparing of words. When their work is done and their task accomplished, the people all say, "We did this ourselves, naturally." True leadership leaves no visible trace of authority — its highest achievement is that people believe the outcome arose entirely on its own.

做事做得好的人,往往让人感觉不到他在做事。他不急于表功,也不多发号令,平日悠然,事情办成了,身边的人只当是自己做到的。今日与人共事,不妨少说几句、少显几分存在感,把成就感留给一起做事的人,自己退后半步。别人越觉得这是自己做到的,这件事才做得越牢固,也越经得起时间。
A Word for Today
The people who accomplish the most often leave the least visible mark of having tried. They do not rush to claim credit or issue many instructions; when something works, those nearby feel they managed it themselves. Today, saying less and stepping back a little from the spotlight may serve better than asserting oneself — what others feel ownership of tends to hold together more firmly than what is merely commanded.
