English

One who stands on tiptoe cannot stand firm; one who takes giant strides cannot walk far. One who shows himself off is not enlightened; one who justifies himself is not distinguished; one who boasts has no merit; one who is arrogant does not endure. Seen from the Way, such behavior is like leftover food or a useless growth on the body — something that people generally find distasteful. Therefore, one who has grasped the Way does not dwell in such striving self-display, but simply lets results speak for themselves.

A Word for Today

Standing on tiptoe to look taller only makes the footing less steady; taking oversized strides to move faster only shortens how far one actually gets. The more urgently one pushes to be noticed or approved of, the more that effort tends to work against itself. There is little need today to rush ahead or overstate anything — a steady, ordinary pace covers more ground than a hurried, showy one.
