儉武

以道佐人主者、不以兵強天下。其事好還。師之所處、荊棘生焉。大軍之後、必有凶年。善有果而已、不敢以取強。果而勿矜、果而勿伐、果而勿驕、果而不得已、果而勿強。物壯則老、是謂不道、不道早已。

道を以て人主を佐くる者は、兵を以て天下に強がらず。其の事還るを好む。師の處る所、荊棘生ず。大軍の後、必ず凶年有り。善なる者は果たして已む、敢へて以て強を取らず。果たして矜る勿れ、果たして伐る勿れ、果たして驕る勿れ、果たして已むを得ず、果たして強がる勿れ。物壯なれば則ち老ゆ、是を不道と謂ふ、不道は早く已む。
現代語訳
道をもって君主を補佐する者は、武力によって天下に強がろうとはしない。武力に訴えた事は、いずれ我が身に返ってくるものだからである。軍隊の駐屯した跡には、いばらが生い茂り、大きな戦の後には、必ず凶作の年がやってくる。すぐれた者はただ結果を収めて事を終わらせるだけで、あえて力を誇示して奪おうとはしない。成果を上げても驕らず、誇らず、高ぶらず、やむを得ずして為し、決して力ずくに走らない。物事は盛んになれば必ず衰える、これを道に反すると言い、道に反するものは早く滅びるのである。
中文釋義
以道辅佐君主的人,不靠武力逞强于天下,因为兵事终究会招致反噬。军队所到之处,荆棘丛生;大战过后,必有荒年。真正善于用兵者,达成目的便适可而止,绝不恃强夺取。取得成果而不自矜、不自夸、不骄傲,只因情势所迫才用兵,绝不逞强好斗。凡事强盛到极点必然转衰,这便是背离常道;背离常道者,必定早早败亡。
English
One who assists a ruler by the Tao does not dominate the world through military force — such deeds have a way of rebounding. Where armies camp, thorns grow; after great wars, bad harvests follow. A skillful commander achieves the result and stops, never presuming to seize by strength. He achieves without arrogance, without boasting, without pride, acting only because there is no alternative, never forcing further. Whatever grows overly strong soon grows old — this is contrary to the Tao, and what departs from the Tao perishes early.

勢いに乗って押し切った成果は、いつか必ず反動を招く。本当に力のある人ほど、結果を得た瞬間に手を止め、それ以上を誇らない。盛んなものはやがて衰えると知っていれば、無理に押し通す必要もなくなる。静かに、程よいところで止まる知恵を持ちたい。

争执或竞争到了分出胜负的一刻,最难的不是争赢,而是赢了之后收得住手。目的达成便适可而止,不必再乘胜追击,更不必把成果拿来夸耀。得理不饶人的姿态,看似痛快,事后往往招致更多周折。物盛则衰是常理,用力过猛的胜利,往往比不上见好就收的克制来得长久。
A Word for Today
The hardest part of a dispute is not winning it but stopping once it is won. A point made does not need to be pressed further, nor a victory paraded. Insisting on the last word, however satisfying in the moment, usually invites more trouble later. Whatever grows too strong tends to decline soon after — restraint, exercised right after success, tends to hold up better than force pushed past its natural stopping point.
