English

The world has a beginning, which may be called its mother. Once one grasps the mother, one may know her children — all things. Knowing the children, yet still holding fast to the mother, one passes through life without danger. Stop up the openings of desire, close its gates, and one lives out life without toil; open them, chase after every small affair, and one is beyond saving. To perceive the small is called clarity; to hold to softness is called strength. Use the outer light to return to the inner clarity, and bring no calamity upon yourself — this is called cultivating the constant.

A Word for Today

When small demands pile up one after another, responding fully to each in turn can leave the mind worn quite thin by the end of the day. There's a quieter kind of clarity in knowing which thread is the actual root and which are merely branches growing off of it. If today feels scattered in too many directions, it may help to ask what genuinely matters most right now, hold to that one thing, and let the rest settle on its own.
