English
In governing people and serving Heaven, nothing surpasses restraint — husbanding one's strength rather than squandering it. Such restraint is the early return to the Way; an early return means steadily accumulating virtue. Deep accumulation of virtue makes nothing insurmountable, and when nothing is insurmountable, one's capacity becomes immeasurable. Only an immeasurable capacity is fit to bear the weight of governing a state. To hold the root of statecraft is to endure long. This is called planting the root deep and making the stem firm — the way of long life and lasting vision.
A Word for Today
Pushing every last bit of energy into a task can look like dedication, but it rarely lasts. This chapter praises restraint — holding a little back rather than spending everything at once — as the first real step back toward the Way. Virtue built this way is slow and unglamorous, closer to a root going deeper each season than to any visible achievement. One way to practice it today: skip a task that doesn't truly need doing, and save that energy for the one that does.
