儉節すれば則ち昌え、淫佚すれば則ち亡ぶ

凡此五者、聖人之所儉節也、小人之所淫佚也。儉節則昌、淫佚則亡。
訓読
凡そ此の五者は、聖人の儉節する所にして、小人の淫佚する所なり。儉節すれば則ち昌え、淫佚すれば則ち亡ぶ。
現代語訳
住居・衣服・飲食・乗り物・妾など五つの領域について、聖人はつつましく節度を保ち、小人はほしいままに贅を尽くす。慎み節するものは栄え、贅沢にふけるものは滅びる。墨子は個人の徳目としてだけでなく、国家の存亡を左右する原理として「節」を説いた。
中文釋義
关于住宅、衣服、饮食、车马、姬妾这五个方面,圣人克制而有节度,小人则放纵而奢靡。懂得节制的就会兴旺,沉溺奢靡的就会灭亡。墨子把"节俭"不仅当作个人品德,更当作关乎国家存亡的根本原理来讲。

In matters of housing, clothing, food, transport, and indulgence, the sage practices restraint while the petty person runs to excess. Those who practice restraint flourish; those who indulge in excess perish. Mozi treats frugality not merely as a personal virtue but as a principle bearing on the very survival of a state.

Loosened caution around spending tends to arrive exactly when things are going well, which is precisely when it does the most damage. Ease is not license to abandon restraint; if anything, prosperous times call for a clearer line between spending for show and spending out of real need. Restraint is not austerity, it is choosing a pace that can be sustained. Those who keep that line tend to last considerably longer than those who don't.
