誠は天の道なり、之を誠にするは人の道なり

誠者，天之道也；誠之者，人之道也。

現代語訳
『中庸』第二十章は魯の哀公が政治のあり方を尋ねたのに答える形で展開される章であり、この一句はその末尾近く、修身の話が国を治める話へと深まる箇所に置かれる。"誠"とは天がそのまま偽りなく運行しているあり方そのものであり、人がその誠を身に体すべく努めることこそが、人としての道である、と子思は説く。天の道と人の道とを分けて示しつつ、両者を"誠"という一字でつなぐところに、この章の核心がある。
中文釋義
此句为《中庸》第二十章"哀公问政"末段之要语。"诚"本是天道自然而然、无所勉强的实然状态,日月运行、四时代序,皆诚之显现。然人不能生而无息,故须"诚之"——通过学问思辨笃行的功夫,勉力去伪存真,以求合于天道之诚。天道言其"自然",人道言其"当然",二者本非相隔,人之诚之,正是欲以有限之身,契入无穷之天。
English
"Sincerity is the Way of Heaven; to become sincere is the Way of Man." Heaven simply is what it is, effortlessly true; human beings, by contrast, must labor — through learning, reflection, and practice — to bring themselves into accord with that same unforced truthfulness. The line marks the pivot in Zhongyong chapter twenty where self-cultivation opens onto the governance of a state.

A Word for Today
Heaven does not have to try; it simply runs as it is, and the seasons turn without effort. People are not built that way, sincerity has to be earned, day after day, through plain, unglamorous work. Giving up pretense and just doing the steady thing is already a step toward that unforced truthfulness; it does not have to wait until some final arrival to count.
