君子生非異也，善假於物也。

君子は生、異なるに非ざるなり。善く物に仮るなり。
現代語訳
君子は生まれつき他人と異なる資質を持っているわけではない、ただ外物をうまく借りることに長けているだけである、と荀子はいう。ここでの「生」は「性」の仮借字であり、生まれつきの性質を指す。「勧学篇」ではこの句の直前に、車や舟、風や水に助けられて遠くまで行ける者の譬えが置かれ、君子の優越とは天賦の才ではなく、道具・師・環境をいかに活用するかにあると説かれている。
中文釋義
此句"生"通"性",谓君子非天赋异禀,而是善于借助外物以成其事。《勧学篇》此句之前,恰有登高而招、顺风而呼、假舆马、假舟楫诸喻,皆言善假于物者,非疾足利喉而致千里、致江河,乃工具与外力使然。荀子借此打破"天才论"的迷思——真正的高明,不在禀赋独异,而在善于借力、善于运用外物以补己之不足。
English
"The gentleman's nature is no different from other people's — he is simply skilled at making use of external things." Here "生" is a loan character for "性" (inborn nature). Xunzi's point, set right after his images of riding a carriage or drifting with the wind, is that superiority is rarely raw talent — it is the disciplined habit of borrowing tools, teachers, and circumstance to extend one's own limited reach.

Someone whose work seems to go smoothly is often assumed to have been given more than others. Xunzi disagrees: the gentleman's nature is no different from anyone else's, he is simply practiced at borrowing, tools, allies, timing, whatever happens to lie within reach. Envying what one lacks accomplishes little; taking stock of what can be borrowed accomplishes more. The people who travel farthest are rarely the fastest runners, only the ones who know how to catch a current.
