English
"Favorable weather is not as good as advantageous terrain; advantageous terrain is not as good as the unity of the people." Mencius ranks the conditions for victory and finds that neither timing nor geography can substitute for people standing together in genuine accord — a claim he extends from warfare to the whole art of governing.
A Word for Today
Favorable timing and good position are borrowings from outside; the accord among people cannot be borrowed at all, only earned. When a well-prepared effort still stalls, the shortage is rarely in resources; it is usually in whether the people involved are genuinely aligned. Before blaming circumstance, it helps to look at whether those working alongside you are actually facing the same direction you are.
