富貴も淫する能わず、貧賤も移す能わず

富貴不能淫，貧賤不能移，威武不能屈，此之謂大丈夫。
訓読
富貴も淫する能わず、貧賤も移す能わず、威武も屈する能わず、此れを之れ大丈夫と謂う。
現代語訳
富や地位を得ても心を乱されず、貧しさや低い身分に置かれても志を変えず、権力や武力に脅されても屈しない。そのような人物こそ、真の大丈夫と呼ぶにふさわしい。景春という論者が縦横家の弁士を大丈夫だと称えたのに対し、孟子はそれを退け、天下の広い住まいである仁に居り、正しい道を行く者こそが大丈夫だと説いた一節である。
中文釋義
景春以纵横家权谋撼动诸侯为壮举,孟子则不以为然,言彼辈但以顺从取容,非真丈夫。真丈夫者,居仁由义,立于天下之正位,行天下之大道;得志则与民共由此道,不得志则独行此道于己身。故富贵不能使其骄奢淫逸,贫贱不能使其变节改志,威势兵刃不能使其屈膝折腰——此三者,方是气节之真谛。

"Wealth and honor cannot corrupt him, poverty and low station cannot make him waver, power and force cannot make him bend — this is called a great man." Answering someone who admired scheming political persuaders as heroic, Mencius redefines true greatness as an unshakeable inner constancy that no external condition — neither riches nor hardship nor threat — can dislodge.

Being praised in good times, ignored in bad ones, pressured under threat: these are exactly where a person's bearing tends to shift. Mencius's great man is defined not by achievement but by refusing to let any of the three move him. Staying level-headed in success, unshaken in hardship, and unbent under coercion, held together as one consistent stance, is what makes a person reliable over time.
