得道者多助，失道者寡助。

道を得る者は助け多く、道を失う者は助け寡し。
現代語訳
正しい道にかなった政治を行う者には、助力する者が多く集まり、道を外れた政治を行う者には、助力する者がしだいに離れていく。孟子は天の時、地の利、人の和を論じた末に、この一句へと至る。助けが少なくなれば、身内さえも背き、助けが極まれば、天下の人々までもがその者に従うと説き、為政の根本は武力や地形ではなく道義にあるとする。
中文釋義
此句为「天时不如地利、地利不如人和」一章之收束。孟子谓行仁政、合正道者,人心自然归附,助力自广;悖逆正道、失却民心者,纵有城池之固、甲兵之利,亦终至众叛亲离。寡助之极,亲戚亦畔之;多助之至,天下皆顺之。故治国之本,不在险要与强兵,而在是否得人心之向背。

"One who holds to the right way gains much support; one who departs from it gains little." Closing his reflection on timing, terrain, and unity, Mencius concludes that legitimacy earns allies while its absence isolates a ruler even from his own kin — support, not fortification, is what ultimately secures a position.

Support is never summoned on demand; it accumulates from how one has already been acting. Someone who deals fairly finds allies gathering without effort, while someone who bends the rules for quick gain eventually finds even close associates drifting away. Rather than scrambling for help when a crisis hits, it is worth keeping ordinary conduct sound, since who will actually step in later is decided long before that moment arrives.
