English
"Those who know it are not the equal of those who love it; those who love it are not the equal of those who delight in it." Confucius sketches three ascending stages of engagement with learning — bare knowledge, active fondness, and finally an absorption so complete it no longer feels like effort at all.
A Word for Today
The same task, done as an obligation or entered into with real interest, wears a person out at very different rates. Grinding through by sheer willpower rarely lasts; those who find some genuine pleasure in the work tend to go further, almost without noticing the distance. That pleasure is seldom innate — it tends to grow slowly, out of repeated practice, into a feel for the work that resembles ease. Before demanding more effort of oneself, it may help first to look for something in the task worth wanting.
