English
"Fine words and an ingratiating manner are rarely found together with true goodness." Confucius is not condemning eloquence or courtesy as such, but warning that when speech and expression are cultivated purely to please, the sincerity at the core of virtue tends quietly to erode.
A Word for Today
Pleasant words and an agreeable expression are easy to like, but they are not the same thing as sincerity. In dealing with others, speech does not need constant polishing — a little awkwardness now and then can actually read as more genuine. A habit of working too hard to please tends, over time, to wear down one's own capacity for real feeling. What earns trust is rarely how smoothly something is said, but how much of it turns out, later, to have been true.
