English
"Learning without reflection is labor lost; reflection without learning is perilous." Confucius warns against both extremes — absorbing information without ever digesting it into understanding, and theorizing in a vacuum without the discipline of actually studying. Real knowledge, he suggests, lives in the friction between the two.
A Word for Today
Reading widely feels productive, yet without pausing to think it leaves nothing behind but marks on a page. Thinking without reading, on the other hand, tends to circle back on its own assumptions. A useful discipline: after finishing a passage today, put the book down for a moment and ask what it actually means before moving to the next page. Understanding needs both motions, taken in turn.
