English

"The wise delight in water, the humane delight in mountains; the wise are active, the humane are still; the wise find joy, the humane find long life." Confucius pairs two virtues with two landscapes, letting the restless flow of water and the settled mass of a mountain each stand for a distinct, equally admirable way of being in the world.

A Word for Today

Some people are naturally restless, moving toward whatever needs doing, and their days feel lively and direct. Others are naturally still, settling into a situation before acting, appearing unhurried while actually standing on solid ground. Confucius pairs each temperament with a landscape, water and mountain, without ranking either higher. Knowing which one comes more naturally is useful, and borrowing a little of the other now and then tends to steady the whole of a life.
