戦とは、相手を欺く道である。能力があっても無いように見せ、用いる気があっても用いないふりをし、近くを攻めるつもりでも遠くを狙うように見せる——『孫子』はこの一句に続けて、敵の判断を誤らせるための具体的な欺瞞の技法を列挙していく。ただし孫子の詭道は、無原則な騙し合いではなく、無用な犠牲を避け、最小の力で最大の成果を得るための冷静な計算に基づいている。

用兵之道,在于诡诈——有能力却装作没有,想用兵却装作不想用,意在近处却装作意在远方。孙子接下来列举了一系列具体的欺敌手法。但孙子的"诡道"并非无原则的尔虞我诈,而是建立在冷静计算之上,为的是以最小的代价换取最大的成果,避免不必要的牺牲。

Warfare is a matter of deception: appear incapable when capable, appear unwilling to act when willing, feign a distant objective when the true target is near. Sun Tzu follows this line with concrete techniques for misleading an opponent's judgment. Yet his "way of deception" is not reckless trickery for its own sake—it is a cold calculus aimed at achieving the greatest result with the least cost and avoiding needless sacrifice.
