English
Know the enemy and know yourself, and in a hundred battles you will never be in danger. Know yourself but not the enemy, and your chances split evenly between victory and defeat. Know neither, and you will lose every time. Closing the "Attack by Stratagem" chapter, this line states Sun Tzu's governing principle: outcomes hinge not on hope or morale, but on accurate knowledge of both sides.
A Word for Today
Before taking action, people usually investigate the other side carefully, but are far less willing to look honestly at themselves. Sizing up one's own strength through a flattering lens is one of the quietest ways to set up later failure. The same effort spent studying an opponent deserves to be spent studying one's own weaknesses too; that is what real preparedness looks like, as opposed to mere confidence.
