English

The best warfare thwarts the enemy's strategy before it unfolds; next best is to disrupt their alliances; next, to defeat their army in the field; worst of all is to besiege their cities. Sun Tzu ranks the costliest, most direct confrontation as the last resort, placing the highest value on resolving a conflict before it ever fully takes shape—or without fighting at all.

A Word for Today

Dealing with a problem after it has fully erupted is always the most expensive way to handle it. The better approach is rarely to confront trouble head-on but to notice it while it is still only a plan taking shape, and to quietly defuse it there. Before reaching for a direct confrontation, it is worth asking whether the situation can be settled earlier; that kind of foresight matters more than force.
