English
An army's spirit is sharp in the morning, slackens by midday, and turns homeward by evening. The skilled commander therefore avoids the enemy when their morale is sharp and strikes when it has grown weary and set toward retreat—this is called "managing the qi." Sun Tzu treats morale, an invisible force that rises and falls with time, as every bit as decisive as raw strength.
A Word for Today
A person's focus and energy also have their morning and their evening. Pushing hard exactly when someone is most tense usually backfires, while waiting until that tension naturally eases tends to make the same conversation go smoothly. The same attentiveness is worth turning inward too, noticing when one's own energy is sharp and when it has already begun to flag, before deciding when to act.
