English
Everyone knows the usefulness of what is useful, Zhuangzi observes, but almost no one recognizes the usefulness of what seems useless. The remark closes a string of parables about trees and creatures spared the axe precisely because they looked worthless — a quiet argument against rushing to prove one's own utility, since it is often the conspicuously "useful" that gets cut down first.
A Word for Today
The one in a hurry to prove usefulness is often the first one called on, and the first to wear out. Zhuangzi's timber survives the axe precisely because it looked worthless. There is no need to display every skill or answer every call at once — time that looks idle now is often the reserve a person draws on later. Staying unused for a while can itself be a form of care.
