井蛙不可以語於海者，拘於虛也。
訓読
井蛙は以て海を語る可からざる者は、虚に拘ればなり。
現代語訳
井戸の中の蛙に海のことを語っても通じないのは、その蛙が住む狭い場所に縛られているからである。これは、大海を見て初めて自らの小ささを悟った河伯に対し、北海若が語りかけた言葉の一節であり、見識の広さとは、身を置く場所の広さと不可分であるという道理を示している。
中文釋義
井底之蛙无法领会大海之广,并非其愚,而是身处之地限定了它的见闻。北海若以此点醒河伯:人之所见,常受限于所居之虚——所处的场域、所守的成见。见识的狭窄,往往不是心智不足,而是从未踏出既有的边界。
English
A frog living in a well cannot be told about the sea — not for lack of intelligence, but because the well itself has bounded everything it has ever known. Spoken by the spirit of the North Sea to a river god who had just glimpsed the ocean for the first time, the line suggests that the limits of one's understanding are often simply the limits of where one has stood.

The frog in the well cannot picture the sea, not from lack of intelligence but because it has never left the well.
