相濡うより、江湖に相忘れんに如かず

泉涸，魚相與處於陸，相呴以濕，相濡以沫，不如相忘於江湖。
訓読
泉涸れて、魚相与に陸に処る。相呴くに湿を以てし、相濡すに沫を以てす。江湖に相忘るるに如かず。
現代語訳
泉が涸れると、魚たちは陸に取り残され、互いに湿り気を吹きかけ合い、沫を交わし合って命をつなごうとする。しかしそれは、広い川や湖の中でお互いを意識すらせず自由に泳いでいた頃には遠く及ばない、と荘子は言う。困窮の中で寄り添う情の深さを認めつつも、そもそも困窮させない環境にこそ本当の恵みがあることを示す一節である。
中文釋義
泉水干涸,鱼困于陆,以湿气相呴、以口沫相濡,情谊固然感人,却终究是绝境中的相依。庄子却说,不如各自畅游于江湖、彼此相忘——因为最好的相处,不是患难中的紧紧扶持,而是丰足自在时,连"需要被扶持"这件事本身都不曾发生。
English
When the spring dries up and fish are stranded on land, they moisten each other with their breath and spit to survive — a touching image of mutual devotion under duress. Yet Zhuangzi adds that this is nothing compared to swimming freely in rivers and lakes, forgetting one another entirely. The deepest care, he suggests, is not clinging together in crisis but a shared abundance that makes clinging unnecessary.

A Word for Today
Helping one another through hardship is moving to witness, but it also means both parties are already in trouble. Zhuangzi's stranded fish keep each other alive with spit and breath, yet he says this is nothing next to swimming free in open water, forgetting one another entirely. The steadiest relationships may not be built on constant looking-after, but on enough ease that looking-after is not required.
