之を望めば、木鶏に似たり

雞雖有鳴者，已无變矣，望之似木雞矣，其德全矣。異雞无敢應者，反走矣。
訓読
鶏、鳴く者有りと雖も、已に変ずる無し。之を望めば木鶏に似たり。其の徳全し。異鶏敢えて応ずる者無く、反りて走る。
現代語訳
他の鶏が鳴いて挑発しても、もはや動じることがない。遠目には木で作った鶏のようにすら見える——その徳はすでに満ち足りている、というのが四十日をかけて闘鶏を鍛え上げた紀渻子の言葉である。よその鶏はこの一羽に近づくことすらできず、逃げ去ってしまう。虚勢や過剰な気負いが消え去った先にある、静けさそのものの強さを描いた一節である。
中文釋義
纪渻子为王驯养斗鸡,历经骄气、应景、盛气三重淬炼,终至望之如木鸡,不惊不动,德性已然圆满。别的鸡未及交手,望风而走。此则寓言所言之"强",非张牙舞爪之勇,而是收敛锋芒后那份不假外求的定力——真正的威慑,往往来自看似毫无反应的沉静。

After forty days of training, the fighting cock no longer reacts to any provocation — from a distance it looks almost like a wooden bird, its composure complete. Other roosters, seeing it, turn and flee without a fight. The story of trainer Ji Xingzi's patient work suggests that the most formidable strength is not aggression on display, but a stillness so total that nothing outside can disturb it.

Real strength does not always show itself in sharp words or a firm stance; a stillness that gives nothing away can be more unsettling to face than open aggression.
