薪は窮まるとも、火の伝わるを知らず

指窮於為薪，火傳也，不知其盡也。
訓読
指の薪を為すに窮まるも、火の伝わるや、其の尽くるを知らざるなり。
現代語訳
薪となる指(あぶら)はいつか燃え尽きるが、火そのものは次々と薪へ燃え移り、その終わりを知ることがない——生を養うことを説いた篇の結びに置かれた言葉である。一本一本の薪はやがて尽きても、伝わっていく火は尽きることがないという対比によって、限りある個の命と、受け継がれていく働きそのものとを重ね合わせている。
中文釋義
薪终有尽,而火种相传,不知其尽——此语置于《养生主》篇末,以柴薪喻个体生命之有限,以火喻精神与道之传续不绝。一根柴薪燃尽,火却已跃入下一根薪中继续燃烧,生生不息。庄子借此说明,养生之要不在执着于形骸的存续,而在使内在的生机代代相传,超越一身之得失。

Each piece of firewood eventually burns out, but the fire itself keeps passing from one piece to the next, and no one can say where it ends. Placed at the close of the chapter on nourishing life, the image sets a finite thing — a single stick of wood, a single lifetime — against something that keeps transmitting itself indefinitely, suggesting that what matters is less the fuel than what keeps being carried forward.

A term of duty, a role at a desk — these end, sooner or later, and that alone is nothing to mourn. Zhuangzi observes that each piece of firewood burns out, yet the fire itself keeps passing on, with no end in sight. What one holds is bounded, but if what was built during that time can be handed to whoever comes next, the ending itself matters rather less than it first appears.
