朝三にして暮四、衆狙皆怒る

狙公賦芧，曰：「朝三而暮四。」眾狙皆怒。曰：「然則朝四而暮三。」眾狙皆悅。
訓読
狙公、芧を賦りて曰わく、「朝に三にして暮に四にせん。」衆狙皆怒る。曰わく、「然らば則ち朝に四にして暮に三にせん。」衆狙皆悦ぶ。
現代語訳
猿回しが猿たちに橡の実を配ろうとして「朝に三つ、夕方に四つにしよう」と言うと、猿たちはみな怒った。そこで「それなら朝に四つ、夕方に三つにしよう」と言い直すと、猿たちはみな喜んだ。合計はどちらも七つで変わらないのに、喜怒の反応だけが入れ替わる——この寓話を通じて荘子は、名目や順序の違いに一喜一憂する心の働きそのものを見つめ直させようとしている。
中文釋義
猴子们朝三暮四则怒,朝四暮三则喜,总数其实并无分毫增减,变的只是说法的先后。庄子借此讽喻:世人常为名目、次序的表象所左右,情绪随之起落,却未曾看清事情的实质本无变化。真正的智慧,不在争一时之得失,而在看破这类表象的游戏。
English
When the keeper proposes three nuts in the morning and four in the evening, the monkeys grow furious; when he simply reverses the order to four and three, they rejoice — even though the total is exactly the same either way. Zhuangzi uses the fable to expose how easily people's moods swing with mere framing and sequence, while the substance underneath never actually changes.
