北冥有魚，其名為鯤。鯤之大，不知其幾千里也。化而為鳥，其名為鵬。鵬之背，不知其幾千里也；怒而飛，其翼若垂天之雲。
訓読
北冥に魚有り、其の名を鯤と為す。鯤の大いさ、其の幾千里なるかを知らざるなり。化して鳥と為り、其の名を鵬と為す。鵬の背、其の幾千里なるかを知らざるなり。怒りて飛べば、其の翼、垂天の雲の若し。
現代語訳
北の果ての海に魚がいて、その名を鯤という。その大きさは幾千里とも知れない。それが姿を変えて鳥となり、その名を鵬という。鵬の背もまた幾千里とも知れず、ひとたび勢いよく飛び立てば、その翼は天を覆う雲のようだという。逍遙遊篇の冒頭に置かれたこの壮大な譬えは、常識の尺度をはるかに超えた自由の広がりを、読む者にまず思い描かせるための導入である。
中文釋義
北海之鲲,大而不知其几千里;化而为鹏,背亦不知其几千里,振翅高飞,其翼如垂天之云。此为《逍遥游》开篇之寓言,以极言之大,冲破常人对尺度的想象,借以引出后文"小知不及大知"的对比,暗示真正的逍遥,须先破除以自身经验丈量世界的习气。
English
In the northern sea there is a fish called Kun, so vast that no one knows how many thousand miles it spans; it transforms into a bird called Peng, whose back is likewise beyond measure, and when it rises in flight its wings spread like clouds hanging from the sky. Opening the entire chapter, this deliberately oversized image stretches the reader's sense of scale before Zhuangzi goes on to question every measure we normally trust.

The fable is a reminder that people habitually measure the world by the size of their own experience, mistaking that limit for the edge of what is actually possible. Before dismissing something as too large or too far, it helps to loosen the usual yardstick and leave a little room unmeasured.
