English

Can you embrace body and spirit as one, without letting them separate? Can you concentrate your vital energy to the utmost softness, becoming like a newborn? Can you cleanse your inner vision until it holds no blemish? Can you love the people and govern the state without relying on cunning? Can you remain receptive as the gates of perception open and close? Can you understand everything clearly, yet still act without forcing? To give life and nurture, to create without possessing, to act without presuming, to lead without dominating — this is called mysterious virtue. The chapter is a series of searching questions about self-cultivation before governance.

A Word for Today

Before trying to lead others or manage affairs, it helps to ask oneself first: is one still soft the way one started out, still clear-sighted without rushing to intervene, still nurturing people and outcomes without gripping them tightly. Running a team and raising a child follow the same logic — supporting someone is not the same as controlling them, and helping something succeed is not the same as owning it. The answer need not come quickly. Simply carrying these questions through daily life is itself a form of cultivation.
