老子道徳経 第26章
重德
じゅうとく
原文
重爲輕根、靜爲躁君。是以聖人終日行不離輜重。雖有榮觀、燕處超然。奈何萬乘之主、而以身輕天下。輕則失本、躁則失君。
書き下し文
重は輕の根爲り、靜は躁の君爲り。是を以て聖人は終日行けども輜重を離れず。榮觀有りと雖も、燕處して超然たり。奈何ぞ萬乘の主にして、身を以て天下より輕んぜんや。輕ければ則ち本を失ひ、躁がしければ則ち君を失ふ。
現代語訳
重いものは軽いものの根本であり、静けさは騒がしさの主人である。それゆえ聖人は一日中歩いても、荷物を運ぶ車から離れることがない。華やかな眺めがあっても、超然として悠然と構えている。それなのに、万乗の車を有するほどの大国の主が、どうして自分の身を軽々しく扱い、天下に対して軽率にふるまってよいものか。軽々しくふるまえば根本を失い、落ち着きなく騒げば主導権を失う。
中文釋義
沉重是轻浮的根本,沉静是浮躁的主宰。因此圣人整日行进,却从不离开载运物资的辎重车,即便面对繁华壮丽的景象,也能安然处之、超然物外。可为何身为拥有万辆兵车的大国之君,反而轻率地对待自身,以至于治理天下也变得草率轻浮呢?一旦轻率,就会失去根本;一旦浮躁,就会失去主导与自持。这一章告诫为政者与修身者,都要以厚重、沉静为立身之本,不可因外物的诱惑而失了分寸。
English
The heavy is the root of the light; stillness is the master of restlessness. So the sage travels all day yet never departs from his baggage train; though there are magnificent sights, he remains composed and unmoved. Why, then, should a ruler of ten thousand chariots treat himself so lightly before the whole realm? To be frivolous is to lose one's root; to be restless is to lose one's mastery of self. Weight and calm are not heaviness of body but of character — the ground from which steady action grows.

Bright surroundings and impressive occasions are exactly what tend to make a person light-headed and unsteady on their feet. Those who actually hold up under such moments carry a settled weight inside that does not act rashly just because things are going well. Whatever today brings, however busy or favorable, it helps to keep hold of that steadiness rather than letting outward shine carry away one's sense of proportion.
