上士聞道、勤而行之。中士聞道、若存若亡。下士聞道、大笑之。不笑不足以爲道。故建言有之。明道若昧、進道若退、夷道若纇。上德若谷、大白若辱、廣德若不足、建德若偷、質眞若渝。大方無隅、大器晚成、大音希聲、大象無形。道隱無名。夫唯道、善貸且成。

上士は道を聞けば、勤めて之を行ふ。中士は道を聞けば、存するが若く亡ぶが若し。下士は道を聞けば、大いに之を笑ふ。笑はざれば以て道と爲すに足らず。故に建言に之れ有り。明道は昧きが若く、進道は退くが若く、夷道は纇るが若し。上德は谷の若く、大白は辱きが若く、廣德は足らざるが若く、建德は偷きが若く、質眞は渝るが若し。大方は隅無く、大器は晚成し、大音は希聲、大象は形無し。道は隱れて名無し。夫れ唯だ道は、善く貸して且つ成す。
現代語訳
すぐれた人物は道を聞けば努めてこれを実行し、並みの人物は半信半疑にとどまり、つまらぬ人物は大笑いする。むしろ笑われないほどでは道と呼ぶに足りない。古の言葉にいう、明らかな道はかえって暗く見え、進む道はかえって退くように見え、高い徳はむしろ谷のように低く見え、この上ない潔白はかえって汚れて見え、真実な質はかえって移ろいやすく見える、と。大いなる四角には隅がなく、大いなる器はゆっくり出来上がり、大いなる音はかすかにしか聞こえず、大いなる形は姿を持たない。道は隠れていて名づけようがないが、ただこの道だけが、よく万物に力を与え、事を成し遂げるのである。
中文釋義
上等根器的人听闻道理，便努力践行；中等的人将信将疑；下等的人则哈哈大笑——不被这样嘲笑，还称不上真正的道。古语说得好：光明的道看似暗昧，前进的道看似后退，平坦的道看似崎岖；崇高的德看似卑下的山谷，最洁白的东西看似含垢，广大的德看似不足，笃实的德看似怠惰，质朴的真看似易变。最方正的东西没有棱角，最大的器物最后成形，最大的声音反而无声，最大的形象反而无形。道隐而无名，唯有这个道，善于成全万物，助其完成。
English
The wise, hearing of the Way, strive to live it; the middling waver between belief and doubt; the foolish laugh aloud — and were it not laughable, it would hardly be the Way. Hence the old sayings: the bright way looks dim, the advancing way looks like retreat, the highest virtue looks like a valley, the purest white looks soiled, the truest substance looks changeable. The greatest square has no corners; the greatest vessel takes the longest to complete; the greatest sound is barely heard; the greatest image has no shape. The Way hides, nameless — yet it alone lends things what they need and brings them to completion.

本当に確かなものほど、はじめは頼りなく、遅く、地味に見える。すぐに評価されないからといって、それが誤りとは限らない。大きな器がゆっくり形になっていくように、じっくり育つものを笑われても構わず育て続ける。急がず、目立たず、それでも着実に完成へ向かう道を選びたい。

认真做一件慢功夫的事,难免被人当面笑话不识时务。这份嘲笑不必太往心里去——真正靠谱的东西,起步大多显得笨拙、迟缓、不起眼,不被这样看轻,反倒说明它还不够扎实。大的器物向来成得慢,响亮的声音反而听不真切。不必急着证明什么,按自己的节奏,把手里的功夫一点点做扎实。
A Word for Today
Taking something slow and unglamorous seriously invites the occasional laugh from people who think it impractical. That reaction is not worth dwelling on — anything solid usually looks clumsy, slow, and unremarkable at the start, and not being underestimated a little would be the more suspicious sign. Large things take their time to finish; the loudest sound is often the hardest to make out clearly. There is no need to rush proof of anything — steady work, at its own pace, is enough.
