English
The Way begets the One, the One begets the Two, the Two begets the Three, and the Three begets the ten thousand things. All things carry yin on their backs and embrace yang in front, the two vital energies blending into harmony. What people despise — being called orphaned, widowed, unworthy — rulers take as their own title. So it is that things often lose by gaining and gain by losing. What others have taught, I too pass on: the forceful and overbearing do not die a natural death. This I take as the root of my teaching.
A Word for Today
Gain and loss rarely look the way they first appear. A choice that seems to cost something now can turn out, later, to be the better one, and a move that looks advantageous today may not hold up over time. What keeps things going is not persistent force but something closer to how yin and yang blend — each yielding a little, each holding a little. Whoever pushes purely by strength tends not to last; a softer stance usually wears better.
