English

Which matters more, one's name or one's life? Which weighs heavier, one's life or one's possessions? Which brings more suffering, gaining or losing? Cling too dearly to something, and the cost will be great; hoard too much, and the loss will be heavy. Know contentment, and you avoid disgrace; know when to stop, and you avoid danger. Only this way can one endure long. The chapter warns against mistaking accumulation for security.

A Word for Today

Chasing a promotion, a gain, a bit more recognition, it is easy to forget to ask what it actually costs along the way. The old teaching poses the plainer question first: which matters more, the thing gained or the person doing the gaining? Knowing when enough is enough is not resignation or timidity. It is simply choosing to keep something whole and intact, rather than trading it away for whatever happens to glitter a little longer than it lasts.
