English

Pursuing learning adds to what one knows, day by day. Pursuing the Way subtracts from it, day by day — less and less, until one arrives at doing nothing forced. Yet from that unforced stillness, nothing is left undone. To govern the world well, one relies on not stirring up affairs; the moment one takes to constant intervention, one is no longer fit to govern it. Learning accumulates; the Way empties — and it is the emptying that makes room for things to happen of themselves.

A Word for Today

The habit, when something needs doing well, is almost always to add — more preparation, more steps, more effort layered on top of what's already there. But there is another way, one of taking away rather than piling on, of trusting less rather than controlling more. If today feels crowded with things to manage, try subtracting one thing instead of adding one. What is left unforced often has more room to arrange itself naturally than what is pushed and stacked.
