益證
えきしょう
原文
使我介然有知、行於大道、唯施是畏。大道甚夷、而民好徑。朝甚除、田甚蕪、倉甚虛。服文綵、帶利劍、厭飲食、財貨有餘、是謂盜夸。非道也哉。
書き下し文
我をして介然として知有らしめば、大道を行くに、唯だ施を是れ畏る。大道は甚だ夷らかなるも、而れど民は徑を好む。朝は甚だ除り、田は甚だ蕪れ、倉は甚だ虛し。文綵を服、利劍を帶び、飲食に厭き、財貨餘り有り、是を盜夸と謂ふ。道に非ざるかな。
現代語訳
もし私にわずかでも知る力があるならば、大いなる道を歩むにあたって、ただ脇道にそれることだけを恐れるだろう。大いなる道はまことに平らかであるのに、人々はかえって近道を好む。朝廷は華美に飾り立てられ、田畑は荒れ果て、蔵は空っぽになっている。それでいて美しい着物を身にまとい、鋭利な剣を腰に帯び、飲食に飽きるほど満ち足り、財貨は有り余っている。これを盗人の親玉と呼ぶ。まったく道に外れたことである。
中文釋義
假使我稍微有一点见识,行走在大道上,就唯恐走上了偏斜的邪路。大道本是平坦宽阔的,可人们偏偏喜欢抄近路、走捷径。结果朝廷宫室修得富丽堂皇,田地却荒芜一片,仓库也空空如也;当权者却身穿锦绣华服,腰佩锋利宝剑,饮食奢靡无度,财货堆积有余——这不过是强盗头子的做派罢了,完全背离了大道。
English
If I had but the slightest understanding, walking the great Way, I would fear only straying onto a byway. The great Way is smooth and level, yet people love the shortcut. So the court is decked out in splendor while the fields lie wasted and the granaries stand empty — and still its rulers dress in fine embroidery, wear sharp swords at their sides, gorge on food and drink, and pile up wealth beyond need. This is nothing but the boastfulness of a thief chief. It is not the Way at all.

華やかな成果や近道に心を惹かれるのは、いつの時代も変わらない。けれど足元の田畑が荒れ、蔵が空になっているのに、装いだけを整えても、それは繁栄ではなく借り物にすぎない。地味でまっすぐな道を選ぶことは、遠回りに見えて、実は一番確かな豊かさへとつながっている。

大道本来平坦宽阔,可人总爱抄近路,图省事、求速成,不愿老老实实走完全程。老子说,朝廷华丽而田野荒芜、仓廪空虚,这不过是虚有其表、盗夸而已。今日若为图快而想绕过该走的功夫,不妨想一想:根基没打好,表面再光鲜,也经不起细看。踏踏实实走正路,看似缓慢,其实才是最稳妥的捷径。
A Word for Today
The direct path is usually plain, level, and unremarkable, yet the shortcut keeps its appeal — faster, easier, requiring less patience and effort along the way. The old warning is blunt about this: fine clothes worn over an empty granary is not prosperity, only its costume. If today tempts a shortcut past groundwork that genuinely needs doing, it's worth remembering that appearances built on neglect rarely hold up under any closer, more careful look.
