English
Honoring the worthy is the very root of good government. Mozi located the source of chaos in a habit of promoting people by birth and pedigree rather than by ability. To truly govern well, a ruler must first raise capable, virtuous people to positions of authority and genuinely listen to them. This line stands as Mozi's sharpest challenge to hereditary privilege and the opening principle of Mohist political thought.
A Word for Today
When hiring or promoting relies first on seniority or connections, the people who can actually get things done tend to end up further back in the line. It helps to set aside pedigree for a moment and look only at what someone has actually finished before. The result may not be the most agreeable choice, but it is usually the sturdiest one, and over time that steadies everything built on top of it.
