English
"Indigo dye is drawn from the indigo plant, yet it is bluer than the plant itself; ice is formed from water, yet it is colder than water." Xunzi uses this pair of images to argue that disciplined learning can carry a person past the raw material nature gave them — including past one's own teachers. The phrase later condensed into the common Chinese idiom for a student who surpasses their master.
A Word for Today
Indigo dye outdoes the plant that yields it, not because the plant lacked something but because the process finished what nature only began. Xunzi's image applies just as well to apprenticeship: where a person trained, or what talent they started with, sets no ceiling on where they end up. Carried through properly, the result can run deeper than its origin. A student outgrowing a teacher is not disloyalty; it is what learning, done well, is meant to produce.
