English

"Carve and then give up, and even rotten wood will not snap; carve without stopping, and even metal and stone can be engraved." Xunzi's carving metaphor makes a sharp point: the deciding factor is never how hard or soft the material is, but whether the hand doing the work keeps going. Persistence, not the object's nature, determines the outcome.

A Word for Today

A blade set into rotten wood and abandoned midway will not even cut through rot. The same blade, kept moving without pause, can eventually mark stone. Xunzi's carving image quietly dismantles a familiar excuse, the idea that a task is simply too hard for anyone to finish. Hardness rarely decides the outcome; the hand does. What separates success from failure is not the material's resistance but whether the hand keeps working or stops.
